SEAS (The
Society for the
Education
of
American
Sailors) is an all-volunteer non-profit
organization dedicated to the sport of sailing and the teaching of safe sailing skills.
Our mission is to promote and encourage small craft activity as recreation and sport by
providing low cost learn-to-sail programs and to encourage relationships among all persons
interested in sailing craft and water safety.
The chapter holds
monthly meetings at
the Parisippany Library.
The Morris chapter of SEAS runs
basic sailing courses for people interested in learning how to sail. Classes are taught by SEAS
members who have been certified as sailing instructors by the Red Cross. These courses
consist of four evening classroom sessions plus two full days on the water in the
chapter's own boats. The basic sailing fleet consists of Aquafinn and Phantom
lateen-rigged boats as well as Designers Choice and American 14.6 sloops, a mix of boats
that allows students to learn to sail both sloop-rigged (2 sails) and single sail boats on
the safety of Budd Lake. Membership in SEAS is open to people who have either completed
the SEAS Basic Sailing Class, or who can demonstrate equivalent ability.
All the SEAS chapters arrange bareboat charter cruises at numerous
premier sailing locations both within the US and abroad. Both weekend and weeklong cruises
are organized. Recent destinations included Chesapeake Bay; New England (Cape Cod,
Martha's Vineyard; Nantucket; Block Island); various islands in the Bahamas and the
Caribbean; Tahiti; Turkey; and Spain. Some upcoming cruise destinations include St.
Martin, and the Sea of Cortez (Mexico). The chapter has qualified skippers and a program to train and qualify members as first mates and skippers.
