The State of New Jersey requires everyone operating a motorized vessel (this includes sailboats operating under power) to have a Boating Safety Certificate.

  • If you were born in 1949 or later, you must have a Boating Safety Certificate by June 1, 2008.
  • Everyone must be certified by June 1, 2009.

If you have at least 100 hours of operating experience, and you were born prior to 1979, you may opt to take an approved test for certification. This is the Test-Out Option, which will be available until June 1, 2008. If you take the test and fail, you must take the full class before taking the exam again. SEAS will conduct an short review prior to the exam.

Classroom sessions are designed to provide an overview of boating terminology, legal requirements, navigation, and general safety information. SEAS classes and exam for the Boating Safety Certification meet the requirements set by the State of New Jersey. The Boating Safety Class is eight hours of classroom instruction (including the test) and is currently scheduled in two-4-hour sessions. A full day class option may become available in the future. SEAS Monmouth is offering both full classes and test-out dates for our members and the general public.
